Castor oil: what exactly is it?

Botanical origin and extraction process

Castor oil is extracted from the seeds of Ricinus communis, a plant of the Euphorbiaceae family native to East Africa and India, although it is now cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. In INCI, it appears as Ricinus communis seed oil. The seeds contain between 40% and 60% oil, which is mainly obtained by cold pressing, although there is also a refined version produced by thermal processes.

It is important to distinguish between cold-pressed oil, which is pale yellow and has a higher concentration of bioactive compounds, and refined oil, which is clearer, more neutral in odor, and more widely used in industrial cosmetic formulations. Neither contains ricin, the toxic protein present in the seed, as it does not pass into the oil during the extraction process. This is a common source of confusion: ricin is a thermostable protein that remains in the solid material after extraction.

Chemical composition: ricinoleic acid as the protagonist

The most unique characteristic of castor oil from a chemical point of view is its fatty acid composition. Approximately 85-95% of its lipid content corresponds to ricinoleic acid, an 18-carbon monounsaturated fatty acid with a hydroxyl group at the C-12 position that makes it unique among vegetable oils. No other oil used in cosmetics has such a high proportion of a single hydroxylated fatty acid.

That hydroxyl group is key to many of its properties. It gives it an extraordinarily high viscosity—it is the most viscous vegetable oil there is—, a high hygroscopicity (ability to attract and retain water), and greater solubility in alcohols compared to other oils. It is also responsible for its behavior as an effective occlusive and for some of its anti-inflammatory properties.

The rest of its composition includes oleic acid (around 3-6%), linoleic acid (around 4-5%), and small proportions of stearic and palmitic acid, as well as vitamin E in the form of tocopherols, which acts as a natural antioxidant and contributes to its stability against oxidation.

Why it is so different from other vegetable oils

If you've used argan oil, jojoba oil, or rosehip oil, you know they are relatively fluid oils. Castor oil is, literally, another world in terms of texture. Its dynamic viscosity is 10 to 15 times higher than that of olive oil, which makes it difficult to apply neat over large areas and explains why it is often mixed with other more fluid oils to improve its manageability.

This viscosity, far from being a defect, is what makes it such an effective occlusive. It forms a film on the surface of the skin or hair that very effectively slows transepidermal water loss, which in specific areas such as hair ends, eyebrows, or cuticles has a real and proven utility.

What does castor oil do for your skin?

Emollient and occlusive function: the basis of everything it does

The main function of castor oil in cosmetics is emollient and occlusive. This means that, on the one hand, it softens and flattens the superficial cells of the stratum corneum, improving skin texture, and on the other hand, it forms a physical barrier on the surface that reduces water loss. This double mechanism is especially valuable for very dry skin, areas with compromised skin barrier, and high-friction areas such as elbows, knees, or heels.

Unlike classic humectants such as hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which draw water into the superficial layers of the skin, castor oil primarily acts by retaining existing hydration rather than attracting water from outside. That's why it works best combined with a humectant that acts first: first you hydrate, then you occlude. It's a layering logic that any cosmetic pharmacist will explain to you.

Anti-inflammatory properties of ricinoleic acid

Ricinoleic acid has demonstrated in vitro and in vivo studies an ability to inhibit the synthesis of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins, particularly prostaglandin E2, by modulating the arachidonic acid pathway. This translates into a reduction in local inflammation that can be useful for reactive skin, irritated areas, or in the context of hypertrophic scars and keloids, where its topical use has been investigated.

Some dermatological studies have explored its effect on wound healing, suggesting that the occlusive environment it creates, combined with its anti-inflammatory properties, can accelerate re-epithelialization in superficial wounds. However, clinical evidence is still limited and does not make it a first-line treatment for skin lesions.

Effect on hair: what works and what is a myth

In the hair field, castor oil is probably where the most expectations are generated and where the most myths circulate. What is well documented is its ability as a conditioner and hair cuticle sealant. Its high content of ricinoleic acid allows it to adhere well to the hair surface, reduce friction between fibers, decrease frizz, and add shine. In that, it is effective.

What lacks solid scientific backing is the claim that castor oil stimulates hair growth. This idea, widespread on social media, is based on preliminary studies of very low methodological quality and on the theoretical mechanism that ricinoleic acid could increase circulation in the scalp. To date, there are no controlled clinical trials demonstrating that castor oil reduces androgenetic alopecia or significantly accelerates the hair follicle growth cycle. To tell you otherwise would be to sell you false hope.

Where users do report consistent positive results is in the treatment of sparse eyebrows and eyelashes, although here it is also important to be precise: what the oil achieves is to reduce breakage, nourish existing hair, and improve its appearance, not necessarily to make more new follicles grow. The difference matters for managing expectations.

Antioxidant function of tocopherols

The vitamin E present in castor oil provides a moderate antioxidant function on the skin. Tocopherols neutralize free radicals generated by sun exposure and pollution, contributing to slowing down oxidative damage that accelerates skin aging. It is not the most potent antioxidant active ingredient available—pure vitamin C, resveratrol, or green tea polyphenols far surpass it in that regard—but in the context of a daily use oil, it is an added value at no extra cost.

How to apply castor oil correctly

On hair: application technique and frequency

Technique matters more than quantity. Due to its high viscosity, castor oil is best applied with your fingertips or with a repurposed eyebrow brush, depending on the area. For hair, the correct procedure is to warm a small amount between your palms, distribute it along the length and ends, and work towards the scalp only if you have very dry hair or a dry scalp. If you have a tendency for oily roots, avoid applying it to that area.

The recommended frequency is once or twice a week as a pre-shampoo mask, leaving it on for 30 minutes to overnight with a shower cap. To facilitate rinsing—which can be laborious given its molecular weight—apply shampoo directly to dry hair before adding water. This emulsifies the oil more efficiently.

If you use it pure and find it too dense, mixing it 50/50 with jojoba oil or argan oil greatly improves its manageability without losing significant properties.

On eyebrows and eyelashes: minimum effective dose

For eyebrows and eyelashes, the golden rule is less is more. Too much product on the eyelid can migrate to the eye and cause temporary blurry vision or conjunctival irritation. Use a clean mascara wand to apply a minimal amount—an barely perceptible film on the hair is enough—just before bed, when the product has hours to work without interfering with makeup.

Consistency here is fundamental. You won't see a difference in a week; the eyebrow hair renewal cycle is several weeks, and visible results of denser eyebrows with less breakage appear between one and two months of regular use.

On very dry skin areas: heels, elbows, and cuticles

In these areas, castor oil works extraordinarily well as a nighttime occlusive treatment. Apply a generous amount to the clean area, massage gently to promote superficial penetration, and cover with cotton socks for heels, or thin gloves for hands and cuticles. The heat generated under the covering enhances the emollient effect. Two or three times a week are enough to notice significantly softer skin in a few weeks.

On the face: for whom it is and for whom it is not

On the face, the indication is much more selective. Pure castor oil is not suitable as a general facial moisturizer. Its occlusivity can be counterproductive for normal or combination skin, and for oily or acne-prone skin, it directly increases the risk of comedones. Where it makes sense on the face is as a spot treatment for very specific areas of extreme dryness, such as the corners of the lips, the upper lip with fine wrinkles due to dehydration, or very dry eyelids. Always in a small amount and as the last step of the routine.

How NOT to use castor oil

Applying it to oily or acne-prone skin

The most frequent and impactful mistake is applying castor oil to skin that is acne-prone or has excess sebum. The logic behind this mistake is often "it's natural, it can't harm me." But occlusion on skin where follicular obstruction already exists is a recipe for worsening comedones and breakouts. If you regularly have pimples in an area, castor oil will not help you there; in fact, it will most likely harm you.

Using it as an eye makeup remover

Although castor oil is used in some makeup remover formulations, applying it neat directly to the eye as a makeup remover is a practice that can cause conjunctival irritation and blurry vision. The viscosity of the oil means it does not emulsify or wash off easily with water, and its prolonged contact with the ocular mucosa is not harmless for everyone. If you want to use oil to remove makeup, jojoba oil or sunflower oil are much more suitable options due to their lower viscosity and better ocular tolerance.

Expecting results in a week

This is not an application error but an expectation error, but it leads to premature abandonment. Castor oil does not work acutely. Its benefits are cumulative and depend on consistency. Someone who uses it for a week, doesn't see their hair transformed, and gives up will never know if it would have worked for them. The realistic evaluation window is between four and eight weeks of regular use.

Applying it to irritated skin or open wounds

On skin with active dermatitis, acute eczema, or open wounds, castor oil can intensify irritation. A compromised skin barrier allows greater penetration of components that would normally remain on the surface, increasing the risk of reaction. Wait until the skin is in a stable phase before introducing this oil into the routine for those areas.

Confusing castor oil with hydrogenated castor oil

In cosmetic formulation, there is hydrogenated castor oil, which has completely different properties: it is solid at room temperature, acts as a thickener, and does not have the same emollient properties as unhydrogenated oil. If you buy a product labeled with this INCI expecting the benefits of pure oil, you will be disappointed. They are not interchangeable.

How long does it take for castor oil to take effect?

Realistic timeline per usage area

The speed at which castor oil produces visible results depends on the area, frequency of application, and starting point. There isn't a single answer, but there are reasonable ranges based on skin and hair physiology.

On very dry body skin—heels, elbows, knees—changes in texture and softness are among the fastest. With three nightly applications per week, it's common to notice a clear improvement in texture within two to four weeks. Cracked skin or mild hyperkeratosis may take a bit longer, especially if not combined with regular gentle exfoliation to remove accumulated dead skin cells.

On cuticles, the effect is equally rapid: one week of daily nightly application is usually enough to see cuticles significantly softer and less cracked. This is probably the use where the effort-to-result ratio is most favorable.

For eyebrows and eyelashes, we need to talk in terms of hair cycles. Eyebrow hair has an active growth cycle (anagen) of between four and six weeks. Results in apparent density and reduced breakage are noticeable between four and eight weeks of regular use. If after eight weeks you haven't noticed any change, it's likely that castor oil is not the active ingredient your specific case needs, and it would be worthwhile to explore options with stronger evidence for hair growth, such as minoxidil or biomimetic peptides.

In hair, improvement in texture and reduction of frizz can be noticed from the first two or three applications. Improvement in breakage and hair length—an indirect result of less breakage—is a process of months. With consistency, after three months of regular weekly use, it is common to see a difference in the overall condition of the ends and in the hair's shine.

Factors that modulate the response

The initial state of the skin barrier greatly influences the response. Very dehydrated skin responds faster to occlusives because the difference in state is greater. Skin that is already in good condition will notice less change. The frequency of application is critical: irregular use is the main reason people report not seeing results. And the quality of the oil also matters: a well-preserved cold-pressed oil will have a higher concentration of active ricinoleic acid than a refined or rancid one.

A rancid oil is recognized by a pungent, metallic, or stale odor different from the characteristic smell of fresh oil. If your castor oil already smells like this, throw it away. Free radicals generated by lipid oxidation are pro-inflammatory and counterproductive for the skin.

Contraindications and side effects of castor oil

When you should avoid it completely

Castor oil is a natural ingredient, but natural does not mean harmless for everyone. The first absolute contraindication is allergy to Ricinus communis. Although uncommon, it exists, and its symptoms range from itching and local irritation to more systemic reactions in sensitive individuals. If you have never used it, it is prudent to perform a patch test for 24 hours before applying it to large areas: place a small amount on the inside of your forearm, cover it with a bandage, and observe. Any redness, itching, or inflammation that appears is a sign that this oil is not for you.

The second important contraindication affects people with acne-prone skin or a tendency to comedones. Castor oil has a comedogenic rating ranging from 1 to 3 depending on the source, which places some people in a real risk zone. In clinical practice, oily or combination skin with clogged follicles often worsens with dense and occlusive oils like this. It is not that the oil is inherently bad, but that its lipid profile does not suit this skin type.

Most common side effects in topical cosmetics

The most commonly reported adverse effect of topical cosmetic use of castor oil is allergic contact dermatitis, although its incidence is low compared to other vegetable oils. In areas of the scalp or eyelids, where the skin is particularly thin and sensitive, inflammation may occur if used excessively or if there is a previously undetected sensitization.

Another side effect that few guides mention is folliculitis. When the oil is applied to the scalp with poor technique—that is, accumulating product on the scalp instead of distributing it along the length of the hair—it can clog hair follicles and generate small pustules. This is an application error rather than an intrinsic problem with the oil, but it is important to be aware of it.

Finally, pure, unrefined castor oil can have a characteristic odor that some people find intense. This is not a medical adverse effect, but it does affect treatment adherence. Refined oils have a more neutral odor, although they may have lost some of their bioactive compounds in the process.

People with specific skin conditions

In people with active rosacea, the use of occlusive oils on facial skin can cause a sensation of heat and temporarily worsen erythema. It is not absolutely contraindicated, but caution is recommended, and it is best to start with unaffected areas. In atopic dermatitis, some patients tolerate it well as an emollient for very dry areas, but others report irritation; always under the supervision of the dermatologist managing the case.

Pregnancy and castor oil: Is it safe?

What is really concerning and why

Castor oil has a historical reputation as an inducer of labor that raises completely legitimate concerns during pregnancy. This reputation comes from its oral use as a stimulant of uterine contractions, an effect mediated by ricinoleic acid acting on prostaglandin receptors in intestinal and uterine smooth muscle. When ingested, ricinoleic acid acts systemically. This is documented and real.

However, what is used in cosmetics is oil applied topically, and here the situation changes. The percutaneous absorption of castor oil is very low due to its high molecular weight and the nature of its lipid composition. Large triglyceride molecules penetrate very little through an intact skin barrier. The amount that could reach systemic circulation after normal topical application is negligible from a pharmacological point of view.

Practical recommendation during pregnancy

The most widespread consensus among dermatologists and pharmacists specializing in cosmetics is that topical use on skin and hair during pregnancy is considered low risk, especially when applied to areas away from the abdomen. However, the precautionary principle remains reasonable: if it is not essential, there is no need to add it to the routine during the first months of gestation.

What must be categorically ruled out is any oral use or intravaginal application, which in no context has scientific support as a cosmetic practice and which during pregnancy poses a documented risk of serious obstetric complications. If someone has suggested this use to "induce labor naturally," it is a practice that should be discussed with the obstetric team, not with the cosmetic one.

In summary: applied to the hair, eyebrows, eyelashes, or as a body emollient in non-abdominal areas, castor oil has no absolute contraindication in pregnancy. If in doubt, always consult your gynecologist or midwife.

Frequently asked questions about castor oil

Does castor oil make hair grow?+

There is no solid clinical evidence that castor oil stimulates hair growth or is effective against androgenetic alopecia. What it does do is improve the condition of existing hair, reduce breakage, and seal the cuticle, which can give the sensation of longer and denser hair in the medium term. If you have alopecia, consult a specialized dermatologist to evaluate options with stronger scientific backing.

Can I apply castor oil to my face every night?+

It depends heavily on your skin type. For very dry and mature skin, a small amount in specific areas like the corners of the mouth or eyelids may be well tolerated. For normal, combination, or oily skin, daily use on the entire face increases the risk of follicular obstruction and acne breakouts. Caution and observation of how your skin responds in the first few weeks is the best guide.

What oils can it be mixed with to make it easier to apply?+

Castor oil mixes well with most light vegetable oils. The most common combinations are with jojoba oil, argan oil, or coconut oil for hair, and with rosehip oil or grape seed oil for facial or body use. A common ratio is 1 part castor oil to 2-3 parts of the more fluid oil. This improves manageability without significantly compromising its properties.

Is castor oil safe to use in the eyes?+

Applied to the eyelashes with a clean brush, outside the area of direct contact with the ocular mucosa, it is generally well tolerated by most people. However, if it comes into direct contact with the eye, it can cause irritation and temporary blurred vision. It is not recommended to use it pure as eye drops or as a makeup remover, as its high viscosity makes rinsing difficult and can irritate the conjunctiva.

How long does castor oil last once opened?+

Castor oil has a relatively good shelf life compared to other vegetable oils, thanks to its high concentration of ricinoleic acid and natural tocopherols that act as antioxidants. However, once opened, it should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct light. Under these conditions, it can remain in good condition for 12 to 24 months. If you detect a rancid or metallic odor, discard it.

Is castor oil good for stretch marks?+

Castor oil can improve hydration of the area and the superficial texture of the skin over an existing stretch mark, but it does not have the ability to regenerate the collagen and elastin fibers that have broken in the deep layers of the dermis, which is what forms the stretch mark. For the prevention of stretch marks during pregnancy or periods of rapid growth, keeping the skin well hydrated with emollients makes sense as a general measure, but there is no evidence that castor oil is specifically effective in this context.

Is Jamaican black castor oil better than conventional?+

Jamaican black castor oil (JBCO) is obtained by roasting the seeds before pressing them, which gives it its dark color and a higher alkaline ash content. Its advocates claim that this enhances its hair effects, but direct comparative evidence between JBCO and conventional cold-pressed castor oil is very limited. Both share the same ricinoleic acid profile. Roasting can alter some of the bioactive compounds. To date, there is not enough data to state that one is clinically superior to the other.
