As a pharmacist, I'd tell you it's an active ingredient I like for a very simple reason: it truly helps to soothe when skin complains.
Enoxolone isn't usually marketed as a miracle ingredient, and that's probably for the best. The evidence we have places it primarily as an anti-inflammatory, soothing, and protective active ingredient, very useful when there's itching, redness, sensitivity, or a somewhat compromised skin barrier. No need to complicate it further.
Do you know what enoxolone is?
Enoxolone, also known as glycyrrhetinic acid or 18-beta-glycyrrhetinic acid, is a compound derived from licorice. In cosmetics, it appears with the INCI name Enoxolone and is used for its ability to modulate skin inflammation and improve the sensation of comfort in reactive skin.
Chemically, it comes from glycyrrhizin, one of the most well-known components of Glycyrrhiza glabra. The important thing practically is not to memorize the name, but to understand what it's used for: it helps reduce the skin's irritative response, which is why you find it in formulas for sensitive skin, after sun exposure, after cosmetic procedures, or alongside potentially irritating active ingredients.
It is also attributed with antioxidant and repairing properties, although it stands out most in its role as a supporting ingredient. It's not usually the star of a routine, but often it's what makes a formula better tolerated.
What is enoxolone for in skincare?
That's the important question. Enoxolone is primarily used to soothe, reduce inflammation, and improve skin tolerance. Simply put: it helps when skin is irritated, easily reddens, or doesn't tolerate certain active ingredients well.
Here are its most interesting uses:
1. Helps reduce inflammation
This is its best-known function. Enoxolone can modulate inflammatory mediators, which is why it is used in products for sensitive, reactive, or compromised skin. This doesn't mean it cures dermatological diseases on its own, but it can be a good cosmetic support.
2. Reduces itching and discomfort
When skin itches, burns, or feels tight, it often doesn't need more activity, but less aggression. Enoxolone fits well here because its role is to improve skin comfort. It is especially useful in routines with retinoids, acids, or after a rather typical at-home over-exfoliation.
3. Can help with diffuse redness
It is not a medical treatment for rosacea nor does it replace a diagnosis, but in skin with a tendency to redness, it can help the skin be more stable and less reactive. If the redness is persistent, with flare-ups or visible blood vessels, that warrants dermatological evaluation.
4. Supports barrier repair
Sustained inflammation worsens barrier function. A soothing active ingredient like enoxolone can help the skin better regain its balance, especially when combined with humectants and barrier lipids.
5. Is beneficial in formulas for irritated acne
Not because it is a primary anti-acne agent, but because many acne-prone skins are inflamed or sensitized by drying treatments. In this context, enoxolone can help reduce associated irritation.
In terms of evidence, its anti-inflammatory activity has been linked to the inhibition of enzymes and pathways involved in the inflammatory cascade, including its effect on 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and other mediators. Translated: it has a reasonable biological basis for the soothing use it is given in dermocosmetics.
Ideal enoxolone concentration for your skin
There's an important particularity here: enoxolone doesn't have a clear universal standard concentration like other active ingredients such as niacinamide or salicylic acid. In cosmetics, it is usually used in low concentrations, because it is a functional ingredient that can be effective without needing very high percentages.
In practice, what's relevant is not so much chasing an exact number as looking at the context of the formula. If it appears in a calming serum, a cream for sensitive skin, or a decongestant eye cream, its presence usually aims to reduce irritation and reinforce the overall tolerance of the product.
- Sensitive or reactive skin: it usually works well in minimalist formulas, with few active ingredients and a good moisturizing base.
- Skin with redness: it's beneficial when accompanied by barrier ingredients like ceramides, squalane, or panthenol.
- Oily or sensitized acne-prone skin: it can be useful when exfoliants, retinoids, or aggressive cleansers have been overused.
- Dry or irritated skin: better in a cream or balm, not just a watery serum.
My pharmaceutical advice here is clear: don't choose a formula just because it contains enoxolone. Choose the product if, in addition to containing it, it makes sense for your skin type and for the problem you want to treat.

How to use enoxolone in your routine
The good news is that enoxolone is easy to use. It usually doesn't cause trouble, doesn't require strange schedules, and can be used both morning and night.
It is commonly found in:
- calming serums
- creams for sensitive skin
- eye creams
- post-sun products
- repairing formulas after retinoids or exfoliants
Order in the routine: it would normally go in step 3, after cleansing and before the most occlusive cream, although it depends on the vehicle. If it's a serum, it goes before the cream. If it's a cream, it would be your treatment and hydration step at the same time.
Frequency: once or twice a day as needed. For sensitive skin, it can be used daily without problems if the formula is well-designed.
In the morning: it makes sense if your skin easily reddens or if you use antioxidants or vitamin C and want a more tolerable routine. Always finish with sunscreen.
At night: I find it especially useful if you use retinol, retinal, or acids and notice your skin is more irritated. It can help compensate.
A simple routine example would be:
- gentle cleanser
- hydrating or calming serum with enoxolone
- cream with ceramides or panthenol
- in the morning, sunscreen
If your skin is very sensitized, there's no need to use ten products. Sometimes a short routine with gentle cleansing, enoxolone, a barrier cream, and sun protection is more useful than a very long routine.
Ideal (and forbidden) combinations with enoxolone
One of the advantages of enoxolone is that it combines well with almost everything. It's not a particularly problematic active ingredient, and precisely for that reason, it's very useful in complex formulas.
Combinations that make sense
- Niacinamide: a very good partner for sensitive skin, with redness or an impaired barrier.
- Ceramides: a logical combination if you're looking to repair and reduce irritation.
- Panthenol: ideal when there's tightness, stinging, or flaking.
- Hyaluronic acid: adds hydration and improves comfort.
- Centella asiatica: a very common soothing duo.
- Azelaic acid: interesting for skin with redness, pimples, or post-inflammatory marks, because azelaic acid treats and enoxolone helps to tolerate it better.
- Retinoids: very useful for buffering irritation associated with retinol or retinal.
- Vitamin C: no relevant incompatibility; it can help if your skin is irritated by acidic antioxidants.
Forbidden combinations?
It has no real cosmetic prohibitions as such. It's not an active ingredient that inactivates easily or that causes predictable reactions by mixing with another specific ingredient.
What I would clarify is this: if your skin is already irritated, it's not advisable to rely on enoxolone to compensate for an excessive routine. That is, you can use it with glycolic acid, salicylic acid, retinoids, or vitamin C, but if you combine too many stimuli on the same night, a single soothing active ingredient won't fix the problem.
So, rather than talking about incompatibilities, I would talk about dermatological common sense. If your skin is sensitized:
- avoid mixing several potent exfoliants at once
- reduce retinoid frequency if there's burning
- prioritize fragrance-free formulas if you have reactivity
- use daily sun protection
Is enoxolone the same as licorice extract?+
Not exactly. Enoxolone is a specific derivative of licorice, more focused on the calming and anti-inflammatory effect than the complete plant extract.
Is it good for skin with redness?+
Yes, it can help skin prone to redness or irritation, although it does not replace medical treatment if there is rosacea or another diagnosed condition.
Can it be used with retinol?+
Yes. In fact, it's an interesting combination to improve tolerance when retinol causes dryness, itching, or irritation.
Is it safe during pregnancy?+
In regular cosmetic use, it is considered compatible. As always, it's advisable to evaluate the complete formula if you have doubts or a specific skin condition.
Does enoxolone lighten dark spots?+
I wouldn't expect a powerful depigmenting effect from it alone. It can help if inflammation worsens the appearance of the spot, but that's not its primary function.
